Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has said he has built a successful career, established his own identity and amassed significant wealth despite being born into a billionaire family.

Davido made the remarks in a recent interview with Vibe Magazine while reflecting on his journey in the music industry and his rise to becoming one of Africa’s biggest music stars.

The singer acknowledged that his background differs from the widely celebrated “grass-to-grace” stories often associated with success in Africa but maintained that his achievements remain exceptional.

“Africa loves the grass-to-grace story. The young boy that was poor and became rich. But not to brag, which other billionaire child do you know in the world who has made a name for himself and also made a lot of money? You can’t name one aside from me,” Davido said.

Born into the family of billionaire businessman Chief Adedeji Adeleke, Davido grew up with access to significant wealth and opportunities. His father has business interests across several sectors, including energy, infrastructure and education.

The singer’s family also has strong political ties, with his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, serving as the Governor of Osun State.

Despite his privileged upbringing, Davido said his decision to pursue a career in music was initially opposed by his father.

However, he remained committed to his ambition, releasing his debut single in 2011 before building a music career that has spanned more than 15 years.

Over the years, Davido has become one of Nigeria’s most successful and internationally recognised music stars, earning acclaim for his music and expanding his influence beyond the entertainment industry.
