The Minister of Works David Umahi, on Friday, said the ongoing legacy road projects of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration are creating thousands of jobs and stimulating economic growth across the country.

Umahi said this while inspecting the Ebonyi section of the Cross River-Abuja Super Highway, highlighting that the massive infrastructure drive had generated employment for engineers, artisans, transporters, food vendors, suppliers of construction materials and cement manufacturers.

“The introduction of reinforced concrete pavement is not only about durability; it is driving economic revolution. Cement manufacturers are recording increased turnover, making more profit and employing more Nigerians. Infrastructure development is creating opportunities across the country,” he said.

The minister said the federal government’s borrowing was targeted at funding critical infrastructure that would deliver long-term economic benefits, insisting that the loans were not being used for recurrent expenditure.

“The President is not borrowing to buy vehicles or pay salaries. He is borrowing for infrastructure, and every nation borrows to develop critical infrastructure. These investments will serve generations to come,” he said.

He noted that the first section of the Cross River–Abuja Legacy Highway was nearing completion, while work had commenced on the second section after the payment of 30 percent mobilisation to the contractor.

He assured that the contractors had been directed to engage more local workers to maximise economic benefits for host communities.

Umahi also reaffirmed his support for President Tinubu’s re-election, adding that the South-east had witnessed unprecedented federal infrastructure investment under the current administration.

“My assignment is to beg, appeal and educate Nigerians on what the President is doing. Everything cannot be corrected in three years, but he is making serious efforts and Nigerians should acknowledge the giant strides being recorded,” he said.
