Chelsea have completed the signing of experienced England striker Danny Welbeck from Premier League rivals Brighton & Hove Albion, with the veteran forward signing a contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2028.

The London club confirmed the transfer on Saturday, adding another experienced option to head coach Xabi Alonso’s squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

Welbeck, 35, is expected to join Chelsea’s pre-season tour immediately as the Blues continue preparations for the 2026/27 campaign.

Chelsea’s latest acquisition comes as the club seeks to blend youthful talent with experienced players capable of guiding the squad in domestic and European competitions.

Reacting to the move, Welbeck expressed his excitement at joining one of England’s most successful clubs, saying the opportunity filled him with pride.

“Knowing the history of Chelsea, it’s a club that wants to win trophies and is pushing to do that every single season.

“I’m really honoured to come to a club of this stature at what feels like a really exciting time. I know a few of the boys already and I’ve had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection.

The experienced striker added that he remains highly motivated despite spending nearly two decades at the highest level of English football.

His arrival is expected to provide valuable leadership within a Chelsea squad that has undergone significant rebuilding in recent seasons.

Experienced Premier League campaigner

Welbeck arrives at Stamford Bridge as one of the Premier League’s most experienced forwards.

Across his professional career, he has made 400 Premier League appearances, competing against some of the world’s best players while consistently demonstrating his versatility, work rate and attacking intelligence.

Beyond domestic football, Welbeck has also featured in the UEFA Champions League and represented England at the highest international level.

The striker earned 42 caps for the Three Lions, scoring 16 goals and representing his country at the 2012 UEFA European Championship as well as two FIFA World Cups.

His experience in major international tournaments is expected to benefit Chelsea’s younger players as they compete on multiple fronts.

Career filled with silverware

Welbeck began his professional career at Manchester United, where he emerged through the club’s famous academy before establishing himself in the senior team under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

During his time at Old Trafford, he won the Premier League title, two League Cups, the Community Shield and the FIFA Club World Cup, gaining valuable experience in one of Europe’s most successful teams.

In September 2014, he completed a move to Arsenal, where he enjoyed another successful spell in North London.

The forward scored 32 goals in 126 appearances for the Gunners and helped the club lift the FA Cup and Community Shield.

Although injuries interrupted parts of his Arsenal career, Welbeck remained an important member of the squad whenever available.

After leaving Arsenal, he joined Watford before later moving to Brighton & Hove Albion, where he rebuilt his career and became one of the club’s most reliable senior players.

Successful spell at Brighton

Welbeck enjoyed an impressive period with Brighton, making more than 200 appearances across all competitions.

His leadership qualities, professionalism and experience proved invaluable both on and off the pitch as Brighton established themselves as a competitive Premier League side.

The striker also maintained an impressive scoring record, netting 26 Premier League goals over the past two seasons while contributing numerous assists and providing a focal point in attack.

His performances earned widespread praise and demonstrated that he still possesses the quality required to compete at the highest level.

Boost for Alonso’s plans

Chelsea will hope Welbeck’s arrival strengthens their attacking department ahead of what promises to be another demanding season.
