CWG: Nigeria clinch silver in men’s 4x100m as Usoro shines in women’s long jump

Team Nigeria has won silver in the men’s 4×100 meters relay at the 2026 Commonwealth Games (CWG). 

The quartet of Favour Ashe, Kayinsola Ajayi, Nicholas Fakorede and Udodi Onwuzurike had clocked 38.12 seconds to finish third in the race, but the disqualification of Canada for lane infringement upgraded Nigeria to second place.

The finish improved on the team’s bronze medal won four years ago at the previous CWG in Birmingham, England.

The Nigerian team tweaked their approach to the relay final, selecting the two fastest men for the first two legs. Ashe started at the gun before handing the baton to Ajayi, the bronze medalist in the men’s 100m a few days ago. Then Fakorede, a 200m specialist, handled the bend before Onwuzurike, silver medalist in the 200m race, held off the powerful late burst of Ghana’s Abdul Rasheed Saminu and Akani Simbine of South Africa.

Australia won the gold medal with a 38.07-second finish. Canada initially finished second before the team was disqualified and the medal ranking was adjusted, with Ghana taking bronze behind Nigeria.

Just a few meters away from the track, Ruth Usoro also won silver in the women’s long jump event. She achieved 6.87 meters in her first attempt and was only bettered by England’s Jazmine Sawyer, who won gold. Brooke Buschkuehl of Australia won the bronze medal.

Team Nigeria’s mixed 4x400m team also won a bronze medal on the night. Ezekiel Nathaniel, Patience Okon-George, Samuel Ogazi and Ella Onojuvwevwo clocked 3:12.85 behind Jamaica, who took gold, and Australia, the silver medalists.

The latest laurels in athletics take Team Nigeria’s tally at the 2026 CWG to 23 medals — ten gold medals, seven silver and six bronze.
