Nigeria’s Ruth Usoro produced a brilliant performance on Saturday to win the silver medal in the women’s long jump at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, recording a best leap of 6.87 metres to secure another podium finish for Team Nigeria.

Usoro finished behind England’s Jazmin Sawyers, who claimed the gold medal with a championship-winning jump of 6.93 metres.

The victory marked Sawyers’ first Commonwealth Games title after years of battling injury, while Australia’s Brooke Buschkuehl took bronze with 6.80 metres.

Australia’s Delta Amidzovski finished fourth with 6.75m, narrowly ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s Tyra Gittens, who jumped 6.74m.

England’s Lucy Hadaway placed sixth with 6.62m, followed by compatriot Molly Ruth Palmer (6.55m), Jamaica’s Ackelia Smith (6.52m), Kenya’s Faith Kipsang (6.46m), Canada’s Izzy Goudros (6.45m), Trinidad and Tobago’s Janae de Gannes (6.28m) and Cyprus’ Filippa Fotopoulou (6.26m).

Usoro, one of Africa’s leading horizontal jumpers, opened strongly with her 6.87m effort and remained in medal position throughout the competition. Despite several attempts by her rivals, only Sawyers managed to surpass the Nigerian’s mark, leaving Usoro with a well-earned silver medal.

The medal further boosted Nigeria’s impressive athletics campaign in Glasgow. It came after Samuel Ogazi captured gold in the men’s 400 metres, while Ella Onojuvwevwo won bronze in the women’s 400m, the men’s 4x100m relay team secured silver, and the mixed 4x400m relay team claimed bronze, all on Saturday.
