Elon Musk has said Nigeria recorded four million more births than the entire European Union last year.
The world’s richest man made the claim on his X account on Saturday, citing information from his artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok.
“Nigeria alone had 4 million more births than the entire EU last year,” Musk wrote.According to data referenced via Grok, Nigeria registered an estimated 7.8 million births in 2025, while the European Union recorded about 3.5 million.
The difference amounts to roughly four million more births in Nigeria.The remarks underscore Nigeria’s significantly higher birth rate compared with the EU.
Africa’s most populous country continues to experience rapid population growth, which places additional pressure on its economy.In February 2026, UNICEF reported that 14 million Nigerian children had their births officially registered over the previous two years, reflecting progress in legal identity coverage.
World Bank data put Nigeria’s poverty rate at 63 percent in 2025 amid rising living costs. The country’s population is estimated at around 250 million.
Separately, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, noted at the 31st Nigerian Economic Summit that, for the first time, Nigeria’s economy was growing faster than its population.
