Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare made an impressive start to life at Ajax after scoring on his debut in the Dutch club’s 3-2 pre-season victory over FC Volendam on Sunday.

The Nigerian forward, who recently joined Ajax on a season-long loan from English Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers, came off the bench to make an instant impact.

The 25-year-old started the friendly on the substitutes’ bench before replacing Brazilian striker Marcos Leonardo in the 71st minute.

Dream debut for Nigerian striker

Arokodare wasted little time in announcing himself to the Ajax supporters, scoring the club’s third goal in the 88th minute.

The goal came after defender Anton Gaaei delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area, causing confusion in the FC Volendam defence before the Nigerian forward capitalised to find the back of the net.

His late strike helped Ajax secure a 3-2 victory in the entertaining pre-season encounter as preparations continue for the 2026/27 campaign.

Fresh start at Ajax

The striker completed his move to the Eredivisie giants earlier this week after joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a season-long loan deal.

Ajax also hold an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season if the Nigerian impresses during his spell in Amsterdam.

The move offers Arokodare another opportunity to establish himself at one of Europe’s biggest clubs after gaining experience across several leagues.

Battle for starting shirt

Arokodare will now be hoping his goalscoring debut strengthens his case for regular playing time under the Ajax coaching staff.

With the new Eredivisie season fast approaching, the Super Eagles forward is expected to compete for a starting role while also aiming to maintain his place in Nigeria’s national team.
