…Commences New Tenure

Ahead of his new tenure as ATBOWATON National President, Engineer Ganiyu Shekoni Balogun (popularly known as De Boatman), following his re-election, has called for constitutional amendments to establish a fixed tenure for elected executives of the organisation, which is the umbrella body for private operators in water transportation and promoters of water tourism across the country.

He urged members of ATBOWATON to take a decisive position on executive tenure, saying regular leadership transition would strengthen internal democracy, ensure leadership continuity and accountability within the association, as well as prevent individuals from remaining in office indefinitely.

Balogun also charged the newly elected executive committee to serve selflessly, work in unity and advance Nigeria’s inland water transport and tourism sector.

He spoke shortly after he was returned as National President at ATBOWATON’s Elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2026, held in Abuja.

Balogun said members should take a decisive position on the tenure of the president and other executive officers by incorporating clear provisions into the association’s constitution.

“We need to decide how many years a president and the executive committee should serve so that no one remains in office permanently. Leadership should be democratic, with regular elections that promote continuity and fresh ideas,” he said.

The ATBOWATON National President described leadership as an opportunity for service rather than personal privilege, urging the newly elected executive committee to remain committed to advancing the association’s goals.

Quoting former United States President John F. Kennedy, Balogun reminded members to focus on their contributions to the association instead of personal benefits.

“It is not about the position you occupy; it is about what you can do for the association. Every elected officer must be committed to working for the growth and development of our organisation,” he said.

He also called for unity among members, encouraging the new executive to work collectively, contribute innovative ideas and hold regular meetings to strengthen the association and advance Nigeria’s inland water transport and tourism sector.

Balogun expressed confidence in the newly elected executive committee, saying teamwork and collective leadership would reposition ATBOWATON for greater growth.

He thanked members for renewing their confidence in his leadership and pledged to continue working with the executive and the wider membership to move the association forward.
