Gunmen have reportedly killed a former councillor of Rim Ward in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, Daniel Danjuma Chong, popularly known as “Hon. Star,” in another attack on a community in the state.

The attack occurred at about 11:45 p.m. on Sunday in Torok village, Rim Community, leaving residents in panic as gunmen opened fire.

Residents flee as gunmen strike

A resident of the community, Cynitha Dung, said the sound of sustained gunfire forced residents to flee their homes in search of safety.

“We heard heavy gunshots late in the night. Everyone ran for safety. By the time people came out, Hon. Daniel had been shot. It was a terrifying experience, and the community is still in shock,” she said.

Dung added that another resident, David Danjuma, sustained gunshot injuries during the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Youth group condemns killing

The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) condemned the killing, describing it as another disturbing attack on innocent residents of Riyom Local Government Area.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, the association said the attackers invaded the community under the cover of darkness, shot the former councillor and fled before security operatives could respond.

The group extended its condolences to the family of the deceased and the people of Torok Community while wishing the injured victim a speedy recovery.

Calls for justice

The association urged security agencies and the Plateau State Government to immediately launch a manhunt for those responsible for the attack and strengthen security across vulnerable communities.

“We call on security agencies and the Plateau State Government to immediately go after the perpetrators of this attack and ensure they are arrested and brought to justice,” the statement said.

The group also called for the dismantling of criminal hideouts allegedly operating in the area and renewed its demand for a ban on open grazing, arguing that the practice has been exploited by criminal elements.

According to the association, the continued attacks and killings of innocent residents must not be allowed to continue, stressing that those responsible should face the full weight of the law.

Police yet to confirm incident

As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command had yet to officially confirm the incident.

Efforts to reach the command’s spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful, as calls and inquiries seeking confirmation had not been responded to.
