The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has announced plans to host the maiden edition of the Women in Security Summit and Awards (WINSEC 2026), aimed at promoting gender inclusion in security leadership, strengthening collaboration among stakeholders, and recognising individuals who have made outstanding contributions to national security and peacebuilding.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, NAWOJ National Chairperson, Hajia Aishatu Ibrahim, said the summit is a national platform to celebrate excellence, encourage professionalism, foster collaboration, and amplify the role of women in advancing peace and national security.

Ibrahim noted that sustainable peace, security and development cannot be achieved without recognising and empowering those who make daily sacrifices to keep the country safe.

“Security is no longer the responsibility of government and security agencies alone; it is a collective responsibility requiring the support and participation of every citizen,” she said.

She explained that the summit would bring together key stakeholders, including government officials, the military, paramilitary agencies, law enforcement institutions, intelligence organisations, traditional rulers, diplomats, civil society groups, academia, the media, the private sector and development partners to discuss emerging security challenges and practical solutions.

She noted that the summit was designed to inspire action by promoting dialogue on evolving security threats, encouraging greater community participation in national security, strengthening partnerships, and advancing gender inclusion in security leadership.

A major highlight of the event, she said, would be the presentation of awards to carefully selected individuals whose contributions have significantly enhanced national security, public safety, peacebuilding, humanitarian service, community policing, strategic leadership and media advocacy.

Ibrahim stressed that the awards were based on merit and were intended to recognise integrity, patriotism, professionalism, courage and exceptional service to the nation rather than political considerations or popularity.

“We believe that when excellence is recognised, others are inspired to do more. Celebrating our heroes today helps build a stronger and safer Nigeria tomorrow.”

She also underscored the critical role of the media in promoting national security through responsible journalism, combating misinformation and fostering peaceful coexistence while safeguarding press freedom.

According to her, WINSEC will serve as a platform to strengthen mutual trust and cooperation between journalists and security institutions.

The NAWOJ chairperson commended partners, sponsors, security agencies and members of the organising committee for their support in making the maiden summit possible.

She further appealed to corporate organisations, development partners, public institutions and patriotic Nigerians to support the initiative, saying sustained collaboration would help institutionalise a platform that celebrates excellence, promotes national unity and advances sustainable peace and security.

Ibrahim congratulated the award nominees and recipients for their remarkable service to the nation and urged the media and Nigerians to participate actively in ensuring the success of the inaugural Women in Security Summit and Awards
