Demetrus Cole Jr. 20 known as Meechi was shot and killed at 68th and Crandon in South Shore on July 19 2025. His family says Chicago Police have video of the shooting but say it is too dark to identify anyone. Multiple witnesses in the building where he was killed say they can identify the suspects and are willing to testify. More than a year later no arrests have been made.

A 20-year-old South Side man was shot and killed at 68th and Crandon in South Shore more than a year ago.

His family says there is video evidence of the shooting, multiple witnesses who can identify the suspects, and people ready to testify. Yet no one has been arrested.

Demetrus Cole Jr. known to family and friends as Meechi was found shot multiple times at approximately 10:55 p.m. on July 19 2025 in the 2000 block of East 68th Street in the South Shore neighborhood.

According to Carpenter an argument broke out over a cup of liquor before the shooting. The confrontation escalated and ended with Demetrus being shot multiple times. Chicago Crime Chaser has reviewed video related to this case in which five to six gunshots can be heard.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Cook County Medical Examiner classified his death as a homicide.

Demetrus grew up on Chicago’s South Side.

His family describes him as someone who had difficulties in his younger years but was actively turning his life around at the time of his death.

He worked odd jobs in his community including painting, cleaning, and helping neighbors move at the property where he was killed.

Everyone who knew him there described him as respectful and well liked.

Video Evidence and Willing Witnesses

His cousin Derrick Carpenter contacted Chicago Crime Chaser to speak about the case because the family says they have not received adequate answers from Chicago Police more than a year after Demetrus was killed.

According to Carpenter Chicago Police have video of the shooting.

Investigators told the family the video is too dark to make identifiable determinations about the suspects.

Carpenter says that assessment contradicts what witnesses in the building told the family.

He says multiple people who were present the night Demetrus was killed can positively identify everyone seen in the video and are willing to testify.

Chicago Crime Chaser has obtained video related to this case. Out of respect for the family and the integrity of any future prosecution we are not publishing the complete footage. The family has given Chicago Crime Chaser permission to share this video publicly.

In the aftermath of the incident, the person who recorded the video can be heard reacting and calling out to her mother. The footage does not show the victim.

No Arrests More Than a Year Later

Demetrus Cole Jr. was killed on July 19 2025. As of August 2026 no arrests have been made in connection with his death. Chicago Crime Chaser searched Cook County court records and Chicago Police Department arrest records and found no criminal case connected to this homicide.

His mother Chiffon Grant and his cousin Derrick Carpenter are asking anyone with more information about what happened to Demetrus to come forward.
