Onyedika has completed a major move to German Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt, signing a five-year contract after leaving Belgian champions Club Brugge.

The transfer marks another significant milestone in the 25-year-old’s career and sees him become the latest Nigerian to wear the Frankfurt colours. He also follows in the footsteps of legendary Super Eagles captain Austin Okocha, who remains one of the club’s most celebrated African players.

Onyedika signed a contract that will keep him at Deutsche Bank Park until June 2031 and has been handed the No. 25 jersey as he prepares for life in Germany’s top flight.

The midfielder arrives in the Bundesliga after establishing himself as one of the finest defensive midfielders in Belgium, where his consistent performances attracted interest from several clubs across Europe.

Onyedika joins elite list of Nigerians

With the move, Onyedika becomes the sixth Nigerian footballer to represent Eintracht Frankfurt.

Besides Okocha, other Nigerians who have featured for the German side include Henry Isaac, Donald Agu, Nduka Anyanwu and Isaac Ojigwe.

The transfer also strengthens Nigeria’s growing presence in the Bundesliga, with several Super Eagles stars currently playing in Germany’s top division.

For Onyedika, it is an opportunity to continue a proud Nigerian tradition at Frankfurt while writing his own chapter in the club’s history.

Reward for impressive Brugge spell

The move is widely regarded as a reward for the midfielder’s outstanding performances during his three-year stay at Club Brugge.

Since joining the Belgian giants, Onyedika became one of the team’s most dependable players, helping the club win two Belgian Pro League titles, the Belgian Cup and the Belgian Super Cup.

Before moving to Belgium, he also enjoyed success with Danish side FC Midtjylland, where he won the Danish Cup and announced himself as one of Europe’s brightest young midfielders.

His ability to break up play, dictate the tempo of matches and shield the defence earned him widespread praise and made him one of Brugge’s most valuable players.

Wealth of European experience

Although still only 25, Onyedika arrives in Germany with considerable experience at both domestic and continental levels.

He has made 268 senior appearances across all competitions during his professional career and has featured in 24 UEFA Champions League matches over the last three seasons.

His performances against some of Europe’s biggest clubs further enhanced his reputation and convinced Frankfurt that he possesses the quality required to compete in the Bundesliga.

The Nigerian international has also become an important member of the Super Eagles, earning 26 senior caps since making his debut.

He was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and continues to establish himself as one of the country’s key midfielders.

Frankfurt confident of immediate impact

Eintracht Frankfurt’s board member for sport, Markus Krösche, welcomed the signing and expressed confidence that Onyedika would strengthen the club’s midfield.

Krösche praised the Nigerian’s physical strength, tactical awareness and remarkable consistency, describing him as a player capable of making an immediate contribution.

He also highlighted Onyedika’s experience of winning trophies in Belgium and competing regularly in European competitions, noting that the midfielder still has significant room for development despite his achievements.

The club believes his arrival will add balance and stability to the squad ahead of the new Bundesliga campaign.

Ready for a new challenge

Onyedika is expected to make his unofficial debut for Frankfurt during a pre-season friendly against English side Hull City next weekend.

His competitive debut could come in the DFB-Pokal first-round clash against St. Tönis 1911/20 on August 21 before attention shifts to the Bundesliga season.

Having conquered Denmark and Belgium, the Nigerian midfielder now faces arguably the biggest challenge of his club career in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

With his composure, athleticism and consistency, Onyedika will hope to quickly establish himself as a regular starter and continue flying the Nigerian flag at one of Germany’s biggest clubs.
