About 10,000 runners from West and East Africa are expected to take part in the 2026 Port Harcourt International 21km Marathon, scheduled for November 14, 2026.

The coordinator of Port Harcourt To The World (PHTTW), Hon. Goodluck Azunwena, announced this while speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Azunwena said the marathon is part of a bigger plan to make Port Harcourt a top destination for international sports, tourism, sustainable development, and community activities.

He explained that this year’s event, themed “Green Race,” is not just about running. According to him, it combines sports with environmental protection, youth development, education, and economic growth.

He said the marathon aims to encourage healthy living, promote environmental responsibility, strengthen community participation, and showcase the city’s potential to the world.

Azunwena added that the event supports three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), and Climate Action (SDG 13).

He said thousands of athletes from Nigeria and other African countries, as well as spectators, tourists, corporate organisations, development partners, and members of the international sporting community, are expected to attend.

According to him, the organisers want to develop the marathon into a world-class event that highlights the resilience, hospitality, and vibrant culture of Port Harcourt while promoting sports and environmental sustainability.

Before the marathon, several activities will be held, including community fitness programmes, environmental clean-up campaigns, tree planting, the Green Symposium, and the School Green Club Initiative.

Azunwena invited members of the public and stakeholders to support the initiative, adding that details on registration, the race route, sponsorship opportunities, volunteering, and the full programme will be announced in the coming weeks.

He said the marathon will help bring people together, encourage healthier lifestyles, protect the environment, and contribute to the future development of Port Harcourt.
