President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a significant upward review of salaries for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent, in a move aimed at improving troop welfare and boosting morale in the fight against insecurity.

The new salary structure, which will benefit approximately 250,000 military personnel, is scheduled to take effect from September 1, 2026, according to a statement issued Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga. Blueprint reports

The approval marks one of the most substantial improvements in military remuneration in recent years and comes as security agencies intensify operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country.

Different salary bands

Under the approved salary structure, officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent increase in their salaries.

Personnel from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent salary increase.

The highest adjustment is reserved for junior personnel, with soldiers from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeantreceiving an 80 per cent increase in their salaries.

The Federal Government said the new structure is intended to improve the welfare of serving personnel while recognising the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces in defending the country’s territorial integrity and maintaining internal security.

Salary bill rises to N924bn

The implementation of the revised salary package will increase the Federal Government’s annual wage bill for the armed forces from N660 billion to approximately N924 billion.

The additional funding reflects the administration’s commitment to improving the conditions of service for military personnel as part of broader efforts to strengthen national security.

Observers say the increase is expected to enhance the welfare of officers and soldiers, improve motivation and contribute to greater operational effectiveness.

Tinubu reaffirms commitment to troop welfare

President Tinubu said members of the armed forces deserve the nation’s support and appreciation for their commitment to safeguarding lives and property despite the difficult conditions under which they operate.

According to the President, improving troop welfare remains a key priority of his administration alongside efforts to modernise the military through the acquisition of advanced weapons and technological equipment.

“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.

He added that the administration would continue investing in the welfare and operational capacity of the armed forces to enable them discharge their constitutional responsibilities more effectively.

Security remains top priority

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security, describing peace and stability as essential foundations for economic growth and national development.

“Our administration will continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the armed forces by providing the weapons and technological tools needed to discharge their duties,” Tinubu stated.

He noted that no nation could attain sustainable development without adequate security, stressing that the government remains determined to mobilise all available military and law enforcement resources to confront criminal elements across the country.

“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” he said.

Message to military personnel

President Tinubu urged members of the armed forces to regard the salary increase as a demonstration of the nation’s appreciation for their patriotism, dedication and sacrifices.

He encouraged officers and soldiers to remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities, assuring them of the Federal Government’s continued support.

“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” the President said.

The salary review comes at a time when the Nigerian Armed Forces remain actively engaged in counter-terrorism, anti-banditry and anti-kidnapping operations across several parts of the country.

Military personnel have also continued to support internal security operations, protect critical national infrastructure and participate in regional and international peacekeeping missions.

Stakeholders have consistently advocated improved welfare packages for security personnel, arguing that better remuneration, modern equipment and enhanced working conditions are critical to sustaining morale and improving operational efficiency.
