French Ligue 2 club Stade Reims have announced the signing of promising Nigerian defender Godwin Itotomi on a loan deal from Nigerian football academy Grassrunners FC, with an option to make the transfer permanent.

The 18-year-old centre-back completed the move after impressing the French club’s coaching staff during a successful trial, earning the opportunity to continue his development in one of Europe’s established football systems.

Trial earns contract

Itotomi was offered a contract following a series of impressive performances during his trial with the French side. He featured in friendly matches against French champions Paris Saint-Germain and German club Eintracht Frankfurt, where he showcased his defensive qualities and composure against quality opposition.

His displays convinced Stade Reims to hand him a deal, with club officials viewing him as a player capable of developing into a first-team prospect.

Development pathway

The Nigerian defender will initially join Stade Reims’ youth team as part of his integration into French football. From there, he is expected to continue his development with the aim of progressing to the reserve side before eventually challenging for a place in the senior squad.

The club believes the gradual pathway will allow the youngster to adapt to the physical and tactical demands of European football while gaining valuable experience.

Opportunity to grow

The move represents a significant milestone in Itotomi’s career and highlights the growing reputation of Grassrunners FC in developing young talents capable of attracting interest from European clubs.

Playing in France will expose the teenager to a more competitive environment, offering him the chance to improve his technical ability, tactical awareness and overall game under experienced coaches.

Future ambitions

Stade Reims have included an option to buy in the loan agreement, meaning the club can complete a permanent transfer if Itotomi continues to impress during his stay.

For the young defender, the immediate objective will be to establish himself in the youth and reserve teams before earning a first-team opportunity. His progress will also be closely watched by Nigerian football followers, who will hope he becomes the latest homegrown talent to build a successful career in Europe.
