The presidential running mate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has accused President Bola Tinubu and some of his aides of showing disrespect to the Christian faith and the Catholic Church.

Amaechi made the allegation on Tuesday while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, following recent exchanges involving the Presidency and the Catholic Church.

He said his disagreement with the President was not based on ethnicity but on what he described as persistent attacks on Christians.

“We are being insulted because we are Christians. I don’t believe in ethnicity. If you come to my house, there is a place for Muslims to worship because I have Muslim staff, and by the right-hand side is a chapel.

“You worship your God and I worship my God, but don’t insult my God. There is a saying in my village that carry your God with two hands so that when anybody sees you reverencing your God, they would join you, but if you are throwing your God up and down, they would do the same,” he said.

Amaechi alleged that the President had allowed his aides to target Christian leaders and institutions.

“My problem is with Tinubu and his aides. He is sending out more attack dogs against the Church, and he has no respect for the Catholic Church and the Christian faith.

“They should leave the Catholic Church alone. They should respect God and the Catholic faith. They should stop insulting Christians and the leadership of the Christian faith,” he said.

Amaechi’s comments followed recent criticism by Cardinal Onaiyekan, who said President Tinubu dismissed concerns raised by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) during a meeting at the Presidential Villa. The cleric had also expressed concern over the country’s worsening economic and security situation, saying “Nigeria is bleeding.”

The Presidency, through presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, faulted Onaiyekan’s remarks, insisting that the Tinubu administration has recorded significant progress in the economy and security, and accused the cleric of overlooking the government’s achievements.
