…warns against repeat of 1983 election crisis

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to ensure a free, fair and credible governorship election on August 15, warning against any attempt to manipulate the electoral process or allow a repeat of the political crisis that trailed the 1983 elections in the old Ondo State.

Speaking on Monday at the Accord Party’s campaign rally in Olorunda Local Government Area held in Osogbo, Adeleke alleged that innocent residents were being killed ahead of the election and called on the President to intervene by directing security agencies to act professionally and impartially.

Addressing thousands of party supporters, the governor said, “President Bola Tinubu, something is happening in Osun State that you need to know.

“Our people are being killed, and as our father, we are appealing to you. We will not accept any attempt to rig this election.”

Drawing historical parallels, Adeleke recalled the events surrounding the 1983 elections, saying the country must not allow history to repeat itself in Osun.

“You will remember what happened in 1983. It started in Yorubaland, particularly in Ondo State, when Chief Bola Ige was allegedly cheated. We do not want history to repeat itself. What we want is a free, fair, and credible election,” he said.

The governor maintained that despite his party’s endorsement of President Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election, members of the Accord Party were allegedly facing intimidation and hardship.

“Mr President, we have publicly endorsed you for the 2027 presidential election. What more do you want from us? Why then are our people being killed? The police have been compromised. They should concentrate on tackling kidnappers and other criminals instead of intimidating innocent people,” Adeleke stated.

As the state’s Chief Security Officer, Adeleke expressed confidence in securing victory if the election was conducted transparently.

“With God on my side, I am confident of victory. If this election is free and fair, I will win,” he declared, adding that the people of Osun would come out in large numbers to vote and defend their mandate.

The governor also accused former Governor and Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, of fuelling the political crisis in the state, urging President Tinubu to call him to order.

“Former Governor Gboyega Oyetola needs to be called to order. Mr President, you fought for democracy; do not allow your brother to undermine it.

Oyetola is responsible for the crisis within the APC in Osun State because he is fighting everyone and making enemies daily. He is no longer the governor of this state,” Adeleke said.

He further alleged that Oyetola was targeting prominent political figures in the state, including Senator Francis Fadahunsi and Hon. Oluwole Oke, while insisting that the forthcoming election would serve as a major democratic test ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Adeleke concluded by urging supporters of the Accord Party to participate massively in the August 15 governorship election and remain at polling units until results were announced.

“Come out on August 15 and vote for me. Stand by your votes until the results are declared. I am ready for this election, and on August 15, our revolution will be through the ballot box,” he said.
