Celtic manager Martin O’Neill remains in hospital after undergoing a “small procedure”, the club has announced.

The Scottish club did not reveal details of the medical procedure but said the 74-year-old Northern Irishman is expected to be discharged within the next day or two.

In a statement released on social media on Wednesday, Celtic said: “In response to speculation, we can confirm that Martin O’Neill has undergone a small procedure in hospital.

“We would envisage Martin being released from hospital in the next day or two and on behalf of Martin, we would like to thank supporters for their kind wishes.

“We would ask that the privacy of Martin and his family is respected.”

O’Neill signed a one-year contract in June to become Celtic’s permanent manager after two interim spells last season ended with the club winning the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double.

The veteran coach was in the dugout on Monday as Celtic opened their Premiership campaign with a 1-0 home victory over Dundee.

O’Neill returned to Celtic last October, 20 years after his successful first spell in charge, following Brendan Rodgers’ resignation.

After briefly handing over the reins to Wilfried Nancy in December, O’Neill returned when the Frenchman was dismissed after eight games.

The former Leicester City, Aston Villa and Republic of Ireland manager later guided Celtic to domestic success before agreeing a one-year deal with an option for a further year.
