The family of detained IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has accused the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) of systematically harassing his independent physicians.

In a statement issued by Prince Emmanuel Kanu on behalf of the Okwu-Kanu family of Umuahia, Abia State, the family attached a petition forwarded by Kanu to the MDCN Registrar, seeking urgent intervention.

“The Okwu-Kanu Family hereby issues this urgent press statement to expose the systematic harassment of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s independent physicians by the DSS and MDCN—harassment that continues even though the core medical issues are sub judice and pending before the Court of Appeal,” the statement read.

The family alleged that while in DSS custody, Kanu’s health was mismanaged, citing dangerously low potassium levels, poorly controlled hypertension, renal impairment, and untreated cardiac abnormalities. His condition reportedly improved only after intervention by his personal physician, Emeritus Professor Dr. Martin Aghaji, and his team.

Instead of commending the doctors, the family claimed they were being persecuted. The DSS allegedly lodged a complaint against Prof. Aghaji with the MDCN, accusing him of “unethical practices” for adjusting Kanu’s medications. Another doctor, Dr. Charles Ndukwu, has reportedly been summoned before an MDCN investigation panel.

The family described these actions as a coordinated campaign to silence independent medical witnesses, warning that such intimidation could compromise evidence relevant to Kanu’s pending appeal.

The statement recalled that on September 26, 2025, the Abuja Federal High Court ordered the Nigerian Medical Association to constitute a panel to examine Kanu’s health. The family alleged that unsanctioned medical reports have since been used to misrepresent his condition.
