A joint operation by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft and the Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has resulted in the seizure of 518 bags of smuggled parboiled rice concealed in four boats along the Badagry waterways.

The operation, which was supported by the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service (NNSBS), was carried out on Friday, July 31, 2026, following actionable intelligence on the movement of suspected smugglers through the coastal corridor.

In a statement issued on by the commander of NNS Beecroft, Commodore Awiuyor Adams-Aliu, the Navy said the successful interception underscored the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration in tackling smuggling and other maritime crimes.

According to the statement, the Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service received intelligence indicating that suspected smugglers were moving a large consignment of rice through the Badagry waterways.

Acting swiftly on the intelligence, Customs operatives, working in close collaboration with personnel of the Nigerian Navy, intercepted the boats with minimal resistance.

Speaking on the operation, the Comptroller of the Western Marine Command, Patrick Ntadi, disclosed that the combined team successfully rounded up the suspects and intercepted the boats carrying the illicit cargo.

“On July 31, 2026, my office received intelligence reports that some smugglers were heading towards our area using several boats. Working in synergy with personnel of the Nigerian Navy, we intercepted them with very little resistance. Upon inspection, we discovered a total of 518 bags of parboiled rice concealed in the boats,” Ntadi said.

He commended the Nigerian Navy for its swift response and sustained collaboration, describing the partnership as a major boost to the fight against smuggling and other economic crimes along Nigeria’s waterways.

The Navy explained that the successful operation was made possible through sustained surveillance by the Western Regional Control Centre (WRCC), Falcon eye, highlighting the growing role of technology in maritime domain awareness and security operations.

According to Commodore Adams-Aliu, the seizure reflects the commitment of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, to building a technologically advanced Navy capable of denying criminal elements freedom of operation within Nigeria’s maritime domain.

He added that the operation also aligns with the strategic directives of the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, aimed at enhancing maritime security through intelligence-led operations, robust inter-agency cooperation, and the effective deployment of surveillance assets across the command’s area of responsibility.

“The successful operation underscores the Nigerian Navy’s unwavering commitment to supporting national efforts to dismantle smuggling networks through effective inter-agency collaboration. It also reaffirms the Navy’s resolve to ensure that Nigeria’s maritime domain and adjoining coastal communities are not be exploited as transit routes or safe havens for criminal activities,” the statement said.

The Navy assured that NNS Beecroft would continue to intensify intelligence-driven operations and strengthen collaboration with relevant security and law enforcement agencies to combat smuggling and other maritime crimes in support of national security and economic stability.
