The American University of Nigeria (AUN) has received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for five new postgraduate programmes in Law and Economics.

The approval, which takes effect from the 2026/2027 academic session, follows a successful resource assessment conducted by a panel of experts from the NUC.

The Commission granted approval after confirming that the University possesses the required academic and material resources to offer the programmes.

The newly approved programmes are:

Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Economics

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Economics

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Law

Master of Laws (LL.M.)

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law

President of the American University of Nigeria, Dr DeWayne Frazier, described the approval as another milestone in the University’s graduate education journey, noting that it reflects the remarkable growth of AUN’s programmes, adding that it will also increase its contribution to research and scholarship.

“Over the past three years, AUN’s School of Graduate Studies has achieved record-breaking enrolment, strengthening the University’s research, scholarly output, and influence across the region and the country,” Dr Frazier said.

He noted that the newly approved programmes would broaden the University’s academic impact while responding to the growing demand for advanced education in Law and Economics, adding, “The addition of new postgraduate programs in Law and Economics will not only further increase enrolment but also expand AUN’s contribution to scholarship in these important disciplines.”

Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Professor Bolade Agboola, said the development represents a natural progression for the University’s long-established undergraduate Economics programme. “This is wonderful news for us at AUN as we now can build on a very strong B.Sc. Economics foundation,” Professor Agboola said.

The new postgraduate programmes will admit their first cohort of students in the 2026/2027 academic session, creating new opportunities for advanced study, interdisciplinary research, and professional development.
