President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria for its outstanding performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, describing the country’s medal haul as a reflection of the resilience, determination and excellence that define the Nigerian spirit.
The President commended the athletes for representing the country with honour and dignity throughout the competition, where Team Nigeria finished with a total of 24 medals comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze. Blueprint reports
In a statement released after the conclusion of the Games, Tinubu said the impressive outing was a testament to the hard work, discipline and perseverance of the athletes, coaches and officials who represented the nation.
Commends athletes’ resilience
The President praised Team Nigeria for flying the country’s flag proudly on the international stage despite the intense competition from other Commonwealth nations.
According to him, every member of the contingent contributed to projecting a positive image of Nigeria, whether by winning medals or delivering courageous performances during the Games.
He noted that the athletes demonstrated the qualities of resilience, determination, discipline and excellence that continue to distinguish Nigerians in global sporting competitions.
Tinubu expressed confidence that the experience gained by the athletes during the Games would serve as a strong foundation for even greater achievements in future international championships.
He added that the performances would inspire a new generation of young Nigerians to embrace sports, discipline, patriotism and national service.
Commends sports administrators
The President also applauded the leadership of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) for their commitment to the development of sports and the support provided to athletes before and during the Games.
He acknowledged the contributions of coaches, technical officials, medical personnel and administrators whose efforts helped Team Nigeria achieve another successful outing on the international stage.
Tinubu urged the athletes not to relent but to remain focused on attaining greater heights in future continental and global competitions.
Government pledges sustained investment
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sports development, the President assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would continue investing in the sector to produce more world-class athletes.
He said the government remains committed to strengthening sporting institutions, improving training facilities and creating more opportunities for talented athletes to realise their full potential.
“Whether on the podium or through courageous performances in the competition, every member of Team Nigeria has represented our nation with honour, dignity and pride,” the President said.
He added: “On behalf of the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I express profound appreciation to our athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators and all those whose dedication and sacrifice made Nigeria’s participation at the Games possible.
“My administration remains steadfast in its resolve to invest in sports development, strengthen our sporting institutions, improve training facilities and create greater opportunities for our talented athletes to excel on the continental and global stage.”
A memorable campaign
Nigeria’s campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games produced several memorable performances across different sporting events, with the country’s athletes securing 24 medals to finish among the leading nations on the medals table.
The performance further reinforced Nigeria’s status as one of Africa’s strongest sporting nations and provided another boost to the country’s preparations for upcoming international competitions, including the Olympic Games and various world championships.
