The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists has honoured the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, with its Award of Excellence for Peace, Security and Good Governance in recognition of what it described as his developmental strides and commitment to inclusive governance.

The award was presented on Thursday during the association’s Women in Security Summit and Awards 2026 held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

The summit had the theme, “Strategic Role of Women in Strengthening National Security Through Leadership, Innovation and Collaborative Partnership.”

The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, represented the governor at the ceremony and received the award on his behalf.

A statement issued by Waiya said the honour recognised the Yusuf administration’s performance in public service, peacebuilding and good governance.

Presenting the award, the Director-General of the National Blood Service Agency, Prof. Saleh Yuguda, who represented NAWOJ, said the association found the governor deserving of the recognition after assessing the achievements of his administration.

According to him, “The association considered the sterling achievements of the Kano State Government under the able leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and found him worthy of this recognition.”

He added that the award would serve as “motivation and inspiration for others to emulate.”

NAWOJ also commended the governor for promoting women’s participation in governance through appointments into strategic positions in the state.

The association noted that Yusuf had demonstrated a strong commitment to women’s inclusiveness by appointing women to key positions across the state civil and public service.

It said the appointments had strengthened women’s participation in governance and contributed to reshaping Kano State’s development agenda.

According to the association, women now head strategic government agencies in the state, a development it described as a major boost to female leadership and public service.

The organisers said the recognition reflected the association’s commitment to celebrating leaders who have demonstrated excellence in governance, security and inclusive leadership.

The award formed part of activities lined up for the 2026 Women in Security Summit, which brought together government officials, security stakeholders, development partners and media professionals to discuss the role of women in promoting national security and sustainable development.
