Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has revealed why he opted to retain his No. 45 jersey at Galatasaray, turning down the opportunity to inherit the club’s iconic No. 9 shirt ahead of the new season.
The Nigerian international, who recently completed a permanent move to the Turkish champions following an impressive loan spell, said sentiment and superstition influenced his decision to stick with the number that has accompanied his rise at the club.
Many Galatasaray supporters had expected Osimhen to switch to the No. 9 shirt after it became available following Mauro Icardi’s departure. However, the 27-year-old surprised fans by continuing to wear No. 45 during the club’s pre-season preparations.
Explaining the decision, Osimhen said the jersey has become a symbol of good fortune since his arrival in Istanbul.
“I believe you will sell more shirts, but I hope you understand my point of view. The number 45 has been lucky for me at Galatasaray,” Osimhen said.
“I want to continue wearing the same number.”

Since joining the Turkish giants, Osimhen has established himself as one of Galatasaray’s most influential players, winning over supporters with a string of impressive performances and goals.
His popularity has continued to soar following his permanent transfer from Italian side Napoli, with many fans viewing him as the club’s attacking talisman heading into the new campaign.
The Nigerian striker recently opened his pre-season account by finding the net in Galatasaray’s entertaining 3-3 draw against French club Rennes in Istanbul, further boosting expectations ahead of the defence of the Turkish Super Lig title.
Osimhen is expected to spearhead Galatasaray’s title challenge this season as the reigning champions aim to build on last year’s success in domestic competition while making a stronger impact in Europe.
By retaining the No. 45 shirt, the Super Eagles star has signalled his desire to continue the journey that has brought him success at the club rather than begin a new chapter with a different jersey number.
