Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has explained why he decided not to wear Galatasaray’s famous No. 9 shirt, choosing to keep his No. 45 jersey instead for the new season.
Osimhen completed a permanent move to the Turkish champions last summer after a successful loan spell. Since then, he has become one of the club’s most important players with his outstanding performances.
Many fans expected him to take over the No. 9 shirt, which became available after Mauro Icardi left it. However, Osimhen chose to continue wearing No. 45 during the club’s preseason.
Speaking about his decision, the Nigerian forward said No. 45 has brought him good luck since arriving at the club.
“I believe you will sell more shirts, but I hope you understand my point of view. The number 45 has been lucky for me at Galatasaray,” Osimhen said.
“I want to continue wearing the same number.”
Osimhen has become a fan favourite since joining Galatasaray permanently from Napoli.
He recently scored his first preseason goal in Galatasaray’s 3-3 draw against Rennes in Istanbul.
The 27-year-old will now look to carry that form into the new season as Galatasaray prepare to defend their league title.
