The Federal University Gashua (FUGA) has announced the appointment of Professor Hamidu Usman as pioneer director of its Centre for Distance Learning (CDL), marking a significant milestone in the university’s drive to expand access to flexible, technology-driven education.
A statement by deputy director, information and public relations of the university Mallam Adamu Saleh, noted that the appointment was approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Yaqub Ahmed Geidam, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen academic innovation and broaden learning opportunities beyond the conventional classroom system.

Professor Usman, a distinguished scholar of Medicinal Chemistry and an expert in Open and Distance Learning (ODL), brings a wealth of experience in distance education administration, quality assurance, academic planning, and digital learning systems. He has been a member of the Open, Distance and e-Learning Association of Nigeria (ODeLAN) since 2023.

“Prior to his new appointment, Professor Usman served as Deputy Director (Academic) at the Centre for Distance Learning, University of Maiduguri, from December 2020 to March 2025. He also served as Head, Examinations and Academic Records at the same Centre between October 2019 and October 2021, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening examination processes and academic records management.
“His appointment is widely regarded as a strategic move that will enhance the University’s capacity to deliver accessible, flexible, and high-quality education through modern digital platforms. The establishment of the Centre for Distance Learning aligns with FUGA’s vision of becoming a hub for innovative teaching, research, and community development,” he said.
Speaking on the development, the Vice-Chancellor expressed confidence in Professor Usman’s ability to provide visionary leadership for the Centre, noting that his vast experience and commitment to advancing ODL will be instrumental in achieving the University’s goals.
