A road crash along the Kaduna-Zaria Expressway on Saturday morning claimed the life of a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Dr. Umar Sani Bebeji.

His childhood friend and colleague in the university’s Faculty of Arts, Zubairu Lawal Bamalle, confirmed the incident to Arewa PUNCH, saying the crash occurred at about 9 a.m. at Dumbin Rauga along the Kaduna-Zaria Expressway.

“It is with deep sorrow that I confirm the death of our colleague and friend, Dr. Umar Sani Bebeji. He died in a road accident this morning at about 9 a.m. at Dumbin Rauga on the Kaduna-Zaria Expressway,” Bamalle said.

Bebeji, 45, was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Commercial Law, Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Law and Coordinator of the ABU Law Clinic, where he championed clinical legal education and promoted access to justice for underserved communities.

He was widely respected for his scholarship, mentorship and dedication to legal education.

Although he hailed from Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State, he spent his childhood in Tudun Wada, Kaduna.

The late academic was buried on Saturday at Kwanar Chanchangi Cemetery in Kaduna in accordance with Islamic rites. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Paying tribute to him, Bamalle said, “We have lost a brilliant scholar, a humble colleague and a man who devoted his life to teaching, mentoring young lawyers and serving humanity. His death is a painful loss to the university and the legal profession.”

He added, “Dr. Bebeji’s legacy will live on through the countless students he taught, the lawyers he mentored and the lives he touched through his commitment to justice and public service.”
