ARSENAL have completed the signing of Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United for £75 million, according to the BBC.
The 28-year-old former Newcastle captain has signed a four-year contract with the Premier League champions, with an option for an additional 12 months.
Guimaraes described the transfer as one of the “toughest decisions” of his life, given his strong emotional ties to Newcastle.
The Brazilian joined Newcastle in January 2022 when the club were battling relegation and became an influential figure in their resurgence under former manager Eddie Howe.
He captained Newcastle to the 2025 Carabao Cup title, becoming the first Newcastle captain in seven decades to lift a major domestic trophy.
Guimaraes also helped Newcastle qualify for the Champions League in 2023 and 2025, although the club finished 12th in the Premier League last season.
The midfielder left Newcastle’s training camp in La Manga, Spain, earlier this week to complete his move to Arsenal.
He said several Arsenal players had contacted him before the transfer, including fellow Brazil international Gabriel and midfielder Declan Rice.
According to Guimaraes, Rice joked about their previous midfield battles, telling him: “Come here and please no more fights, now we’re friends.”
Explaining his decision to leave Newcastle, Guimaraes said he wanted a new challenge and an opportunity to compete for major honours.
“I want to win trophies, I want to make history and I think I’m in the right place to do it,” he said.
Guimaraes becomes Arsenal’s latest major addition as the club seek to strengthen their squad and compete for domestic and European honours.
Newcastle, meanwhile, wished their former captain and his family well following his departure after four-and-a-half years at the club. (BBC Sports)
