The journey to occupy the one seat at Government House in Yola in next year’s general election could be decided by Adamawa’s Northern Senatorial District as far as the governorship race is concerned. However, political gladiators are currently looking at the zone as the centre of intense political activity, with parties exploring beyond traditional campaign tactics to win its support.
Political pundits predict that from selecting running mates and forming alliances to analysing voting trends and regional interests, the Northern Senatorial District is becoming a crucial factor in the political landscape. Its influence could determine the outcome when Adamawa residents vote in 2027.
Although official campaigns haven’t started, one zone has dominated political conversations: the Northern Senatorial District. This renewed focus isn’t coincidental. All three major parties—the APC, PDP, and ADC—have chosen their deputy governorship candidates from the Northern Senatorial District.
Speaking with BusinessDay Sunday, Yusuf Buba, a political analyst, said that this pattern is too important to dismiss as mere coincidence. While their gubernatorial candidates hail from other parts of the state, each party deliberately selected a running mate from the north.
He stressed that many interpret this as more than a move for regional balance. It’s seen as an acknowledgement of the district’s electoral might, political influence, and strategic significance within Adamawa’s politics.
He said the list of governorship tickets submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) clearly shows that all three major parties consider Adamawa North indispensable to their electoral calculations.
The APC selected Adamu Kamale as the running mate to its governorship candidate, Ahmed Tijjani Galadima. The PDP nominated Alhaji Abubakar Mahmud Wambai as deputy to Maurice Vunobolki, while the ADC picked Umar Mustapha Madawaki to run alongside Ambassador Omar Suleiman, popularly known as Omarana.
The question is why all three parties settled on the same senatorial district. It is obviously a carefully considered political strategy.
Furthermore, regional balancing remains one of the strongest considerations in governorship elections. Where a governorship candidate comes from another senatorial district, selecting a deputy from Adamawa North broadens the party’s appeal. It strengthens its chances of attracting votes from one of the state’s most politically active regions.
Similarly, the district’s large voting population spread across several local government areas makes it impossible for any serious political party to ignore.
Although no single senatorial district can solely determine the outcome of a governorship election, Adamawa North has consistently proved to be one of the most strategic battlegrounds in the state’s politics.
Analysts maintained that the district is home to several influential politicians, respected traditional rulers, opinion leaders and political stakeholders whose support often shapes electoral outcomes beyond their immediate communities.
For that reason, no major political party can afford to neglect the North if it hopes to remain competitive statewide.
While the choice of deputy governorship candidates has dominated political discussions, analysts insist that the election will ultimately be decided by more than zoning arrangements; security, agriculture, infrastructure, education, healthcare, youth employment, and the cost of living are expected to dominate campaign conversations as voters assess the competing candidates.
Political observers also believe incumbency will remain one of the PDP’s strongest assets. The ruling party is expected to rely heavily on its established grassroots structures, the achievements of Governor Fintiri’s administration and its long-standing political network across the 21 local government areas.
The APC, however, is equally regarded as a formidable challenger. Analysts say that if the party succeeds in maintaining internal cohesion and resolving lingering grievances from its primary election, it could present one of the strongest contests against the ruling party.
The ADC, meanwhile, hopes to capitalise on growing public dissatisfaction among voters seeking an alternative to the two dominant political parties.
Another development adding a fresh dimension to the contest is the expected participation of former Senator Ishaku Abbo, the Labour Party’s governorship candidate.
Unlike the candidates of the APC, PDP and ADC, Abbo himself hails from the Northern Senatorial District.
Having represented Adamawa North in the Senate, he built considerable political goodwill through constituency projects in education, healthcare, infrastructure and youth empowerment. Over the years, he has cultivated an image as a grassroots politician with loyal supporters across the zone. His emergence raises a significant political question.
Can the three major parties dilute Abbo’s influence by selecting their deputies from the same district, or will his personal popularity continue to command substantial support across the North?
Political opinions remain sharply divided.
Some analysts believe the strategy may fragment the northern vote among several political parties, while others argue that voters have become increasingly sophisticated and are now guided more by credibility, performance and leadership qualities than by regional sentiment alone
Within the APC, party leaders express confidence that the choice of Hon. Adamu Kamale provides the right political balance.
Kamale, a former Chairman of Michika Local Government Area, former Commissioner and former member of the House of Representatives representing Michika/Madagali Federal Constituency, is widely regarded as one of the state’s most experienced grassroots politicians.
Niwesa Kushi, a former Adamawa State House of Assembly aspirant under the APC and currently the party’s Campaign Coordinator in Demsa Local Government Area, described Kamale’s nomination as a major advantage.
According to him, Kamale’s political resume and extensive grassroots network make him one of the party’s strongest assets in northern Adamawa.
Notably, since the creation of the state, the Central Senatorial District has never produced a governor, making Ahmed Tijjani Galadima’s emergence historically significant.
Therefore, selecting a running mate from Adamawa North provides the political balance needed for the ticket.
The party also argued that Kamale’s experience would strengthen the APC’s chances, particularly because the outgoing governor also comes from the Northern Senatorial District.
However, they maintained that the Southern Senatorial District remains the state’s largest voting bloc and has historically played the biggest role in producing governors.
APC members believe it possesses stronger political structures in the South than many of its competitors.
Using electoral calculations, it is opined that Michika Local Government Area alone has 16 electoral wards, the highest in the Northern Senatorial District. Pre-election predictions suggest that votes from Mubi North, Mubi South and Maiha could be shared between Kamale and Senator Ishaku Abbo, while expressing confidence that the APC would dominate Michika, Madagali and Maiha.
Several appeals have been made to the national and state leadership of the party to reconcile aggrieved aspirants following the primary election, warning that unresolved internal disputes could encourage anti-party activities.
The African Democratic Congress has also anchored part of its electoral strategy on Adamawa North through the selection of Mustapha Madawaki.
Madawaki, a medical doctor from Madagali Local Government Area and former party chairman in Mubi, is expected to complement Ambassador Omar Suleiman’s campaign with his background in healthcare, community service and grassroots politics.
Adiel Olse, the party’s chairman in Lamurde Local Government Area, acknowledged that politics remains unpredictable but expressed confidence in the ticket.
“Politics is dynamic, and nobody can predict the outcome with certainty,” he said. “However, we believe Dr Madawaki’s integrity, popularity and acceptability across the Northern Senatorial District give our party a significant advantage.”
For ADC, Madawaki is viewed as a respected political figure whose influence extends beyond his immediate constituency. They are confident that the ADC will secure substantial support from the North.
Even though the leadership had earlier considered selecting a deputy from the Southern Senatorial District, the eventual decision to choose Madawaki reflected changing political realities and the need to maximise electoral advantage.
The PDP also believes its choice of Abubakar Mahmud Wambai strengthens its electoral prospects.
The party said Wambai’s nomination not only preserves Adamawa’s religious balance by pairing a Christian governorship candidate with a Muslim deputy, but also brings political experience, competence and broad acceptability.
Wambai previously represented Mubi North, Mubi South and Maiha Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and currently serves as a senior traditional title holder within the Mubi Emirate.
Abner Tagushi, media aide to PDP governorship candidate, Drurice Vunobolki, described Wambai’s selection as a carefully calculated political decision.
He explained that the PDP considered the distribution of governorship aspirants across the state’s three senatorial districts before arriving at its decision.
While the Southern Senatorial District has only one major governorship candidate and the Northern District has one, the Central Senatorial District has several prominent aspirants.
“It was politically wiser to select a running mate from a zone with less competition,” Tagushi said.
Since nobody in politics wants to become a “second-class citizen,” the PDP also believed that Wambai possesses the political capacity to deliver not only his immediate constituency but also neighbouring local government areas, including Michika and Madagali.
They maintained that the PDP’s well-established political structures across all 21 local government areas remain one of the party’s greatest advantages.
Consequently, calculations show that the Southern Senatorial District, which has the highest number of local government areas in the state, has historically played a decisive role in producing governors, and the party expressed confidence that it retains substantial support in the zone. Beyond party strategies, many voters insist that competence, integrity and performance will weigh more heavily than zoning or political alliances.
Enoch Bebejo, from Michika Local Government Area, believes Adamawa voters have become increasingly politically conscious.
“People are no longer voting simply because of political parties,” he said. “They want leaders with integrity, compassion and a track record of improving lives. Politicians should allow their achievements to speak for them.”
Similarly, Kennedy Samson, a resident of Mubi, argued that contemporary politics has evolved beyond party loyalty.
According to him, voters increasingly value leaders who remain accessible to their communities, respond during difficult times, and consistently defend the interests of ordinary citizens.
“People now pay attention to those who stand with them in times of hardship,” he said. “Political parties are important, but credibility and competence have become even more important.
The emergence of three deputy governorship candidates from the Northern Senatorial District has undoubtedly reshaped the political landscape ahead of the 2027 election.
Whether the North votes as a united bloc or divides along party lines remains one of the biggest unanswered questions.
Will the APC, PDP and ADC succeed in weakening Labour Party candidate Senator Ishaku Abbo’s influence within his political base?
Political pundits expressed reservations about whether Abbo’s popularity provides him with a decisive advantage despite the strategies adopted by the larger parties ,or whether Adamawa voters will ultimately focus less on geography and more on leadership, governance, capacity, results-oriented, competence, and credibility? For now, only time will provide the answers.
