The Association of Yoruba Obas and Leaders in the Northern States of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has declared its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing improvements in security, education, fuel supply and the economy.

The Chairman of the association, His Highness Alh. (Dr) Murtala Sani Adeleke, disclosed this on Saturday while briefing journalists after the association’s quarterly meeting at its headquarters in Bwari, Abuja.

He said the association reviewed the state of affairs in the country and resolved to support the Tinubu administration based on what he described as its achievements in key sectors affecting Nigerians.

According to him, security remains one of the major concerns of Nigerians, particularly in the North, but there have been noticeable improvements under the present administration.

He cited recent rescue operations involving victims of bandit attacks in Kwara, Niger and Borno states as evidence of increased efforts by security agencies.

The chairman also commended the Federal Government for improving the welfare of security personnel and establishing additional military formations across the country.

“We want to appreciate the President for his leadership role in making this thing happen quietly. We want to tell you that we, the Yorubas in the North, are fully in support of the President on this issue of security,” he said.

On education, the Yoruba leaders commended the administration for its student financing initiatives, saying they had enabled some students who previously could not afford university education to gain access to higher education.

He also praised the government for its handling of industrial relations in the university system, claiming that the administration had succeeded in preventing prolonged strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The chairman said the association also considered developments in the economy before deciding to support the administration.

He claimed that the country’s capital market had grown significantly from about N33 trillion in 2023 to between N160 trillion and N170 trillion currently.

He further said the removal of fuel scarcity and improved availability of petrol in northern states had brought relief to residents who previously depended on the black market and paid exorbitant prices.

“Before the coming of this government, we didn’t have fuel in petrol stations. We bought fuel at black market and at exorbitant rates. In some states, you buy up to N2,500 per litre, and you won’t even get it at the petrol station.

“But since the coming of this government, we in the North have been enjoying steady fuel supply in all our fuel stations. You just drive in, buy and go,” he said.

The association said its decision was not aimed at criticising the government but at acknowledging what it considered positive developments under the Tinubu administration.

“Our intention is not to criticise but to appreciate the present government and let them know that we are for them. We support them 100 per cent,” he said.

He added that the association would continue to support the President and work with governors in the northern states, expressing optimism that the support would continue into the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the council, which has been in existence for over a decade, though culture-laden, is also engaged in socio-political activities, with a focus on peaceful coexistence between the different entities and systems that make up the federation.

He encouraged all citizens to key into government programmes, voter registration, and voting during elections.
