Super Eagles winger Yira Sor has completed his move to newly promoted Turkish Super Lig side Amedspor from Belgian club Genk, becoming the second Nigerian international to join the club during the summer transfer window.

Amedspor confirmed the arrival of the 26-year-old winger on Monday through a video shared on its official social media platforms, bringing an end to months of uncertainty over Sor’s future at Genk.

Sor gets fresh start in Turkey

Sor had been expected to leave Genk this summer following a difficult spell at the Belgian club, where injuries repeatedly disrupted his progress.

The Nigerian joined Genk from Czech Republic side Slavia Prague in January 2023 but struggled to establish himself as a regular member of the team during his time in Belgium.

Persistent injury problems limited his appearances and prevented him from building the consistency needed to secure a regular starting role.

His transfer to Amedspor now gives the winger an opportunity to revive his career in a new league as the club prepares for its first-ever campaign in Turkey’s top division.

Sor made his Super Eagles debut in March and will hope that regular playing time in Turkey helps him regain his best form and strengthen his position in the national team.

Sor reunites with Gift Orban

The move means Sor will link up with fellow Nigerian international Gift Orban, who recently joined Amedspor on a season-long loan from Bundesliga club Hoffenheim.

Orban’s transfer reportedly includes an obligation for Amedspor to make the move permanent if certain conditions are fulfilled.

The striker had endured an uncertain period at Hoffenheim after falling out of favour at the German club and subsequently spending time on loan at Italian side Hellas Verona.

Orban scored seven goals and registered three assists in 29 Serie A appearances for Verona last season, although his efforts were not enough to prevent the Italian club from being relegated.

His switch to Amedspor provides the 23-year-old forward with another opportunity to rebuild his career, while Sor will also be hoping to make a strong impression after his injury-hit spell in Belgium.

Amedspor banks on Nigerian attackers

The arrival of Sor and Orban gives Amedspor two Nigerian attackers ahead of what promises to be a historic Super Lig campaign for the newly promoted club.

Both players are expected to play important roles as Amedspor attempts to establish itself in Turkey’s top flight after securing promotion.

Their arrivals also highlight the increasing presence of Nigerian players in Turkish football during the current transfer window.

Kelechi Iheanacho is among the other Nigerian internationals who have moved to Turkey this summer, with the Super Eagles forward recently joining second-tier club Bursaspor.

For Sor, the immediate challenge will be to remain fit, regain his rhythm and establish himself as an important player for Amedspor.

A successful spell in Turkey could also boost his chances of maintaining his place in the Super Eagles setup after making his international debut earlier this year.

With Amedspor preparing for its maiden Super Lig campaign, Sor’s arrival adds further attacking options to a squad seeking to make a strong impression on the Turkish top flight.
