Former Kaduna Central Senator and All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate, Shehu Sani, has dismissed Afrobeats star Davido’s appeal to United States President, Donald Trump over the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.

Sani said those attempting to involve Trump in Nigeria’s electoral process were “just wasting their time.”

He noted that the US president had little interest in the credibility of elections in Africa.

Sani’s comments came in response to Davido’s recent appeal for Trump to pay attention to the Osun election amid concerns about peace and the integrity of the poll.

In a post on his X handle on Wednesday, the former lawmaker said Trump was different from former US Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, who, according to him, showed greater interest in democratic developments in Africa.

“Those who are trying to drag Mr Trump into our elections are just wasting their time. Trump is not Obama or Biden. He has little interest in the credibility or otherwise of elections in Africa,” Sani wrote.

He cited the elections in Tanzania, Uganda and Cameroon as examples of what he described as Trump’s limited interest in the credibility of African elections.

Sani further stated that Trump currently had other major issues demanding his attention, including the Strait of Hormuz, Gaza and the war in Ukraine.

“Mr Trump’s hands are full with Strait of Hormuz, Gaza and Ukraine; and most importantly, his party is battling to survive the upcoming Senate and House of Representatives elections,” he added.

It will be recalled that Davido had on Tuesday called on Trump to pay close attention to the Osun State governorship election, expressing concern about possible bloodshed, intimidation and disruption of the democratic process.

The singer urged for peace, transparency and a free and fair election as the state prepares for the August 15 governorship poll.
