The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has unveiled more than 12 infrastructural and medical projects initiated by its management, as the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to providing accessible, affordable and quality healthcare services.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu, who led the management and other stakeholders in the health sector on a facility tour of the projects on Tuesday, said the developments were critical to improving healthcare delivery and achieving better outcomes for patients and other users of the hospital.

The CMD said the over 50-year-old institution had witnessed significant deterioration in some of its structures and facilities over the years, making comprehensive infrastructural renewal imperative.

She stressed that upgrading the hospital’s facilities was essential to restoring a conducive environment for healthcare delivery and improving the quality of services available to the public.

The facility tour was attended by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Daju Kachollom, mni, who was represented by the Medical Director, National Orthopaedic Hospital, Benin.

The representative also unveiled the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), among other projects.

The Permanent Secretary commended Prof. Ize-Iyamu for what she described as visionary leadership and her commitment to advancing quality healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

She noted that the ongoing developments at UBTH would further strengthen the hospital’s capacity to respond effectively to the healthcare needs of the people.

Among the newly unveiled facilities is a modern police post, designed to strengthen security within the hospital environment, as well as an expanded Accident and Emergency waiting area aimed at improving the experience and management of patients requiring urgent medical attention.

The hospital has also commissioned a sophisticated mortuary complex, a Multi-Faith Centre and a specialised Renal Premium Ward, adding new dimensions to the institution’s capacity to provide specialised and patient-centred services.

Other projects include a newly established gas plant, a geriatric library and lounge, as well as a state-of-the-art 160-slice CT scan facility housed within the Radiology Department.

The CT scan facility is expected to enhance diagnostic capacity and improve the hospital’s ability to detect and manage complex medical conditions.

Also unveiled was a dedicated Special Investigation Unit, alongside a contemporary dentistry complex and an advanced oncology centre, further expanding UBTH’s capacity for specialised healthcare services.

The wave of infrastructural development also includes an adjacent pantry linked to the hospital’s main operating theatre. The management described the projects collectively as part of its broader effort to modernise the institution, improve efficiency and establish a new benchmark for medical excellence in healthcare delivery.
