The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State is divided over the endorsement of Governor Nasir Idris for a second term in 2027, with some prominent stakeholders insisting on supporting the governor, popularly known as Kauran Gwandu.

A group of PDP elders led by former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi (rtd), had earlier announced their support for Governor Idris after a stakeholders’ meeting in Birnin Kebbi.

They cited his infrastructural development, including road construction, rehabilitation and reconstruction works, as well as the establishment and upgrade of hospitals, schools and economic empowerment programmes.

However, the State PDP Chairman, Alhaji Usman Bello Suru, rejected the endorsement within 24 hours, saying the party had already chosen its candidates for all elective positions.

Deepening the divide, the PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate, Maj-Gen. Bello Sarkin Yaki (rtd), also declared support for Governor Idris, stating there was “no alternative” with a comparable leadership and development record. He urged voters to reject “selfish and desperate politicians.”

He cited the facelift of the state capital, the reconstruction of the abandoned Koko-Zuru federal road, the construction of township and inter-town roads, the establishment of new hospitals and educational institutions and the rehabilitation of existing ones, as well as welfarism and result-oriented empowerment programmes.

The development was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by Abdullahi Idris Sadaukin Zuru, Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy to the Kebbi State Governor.

According to the statement, the endorsement push came during a courtesy visit by the Governor’s Media Team, which is currently on a nationwide advocacy tour.

Receiving the team, Gen. Sarkin Yaki said: “I could not see any individual with a clean bill of health, track record of undisputable leadership qualities, integrity, generosity, sincerity of purpose and demonstrated commitment that can be compared with Kauran Gwandu.”

“Let me therefore advise the few paperweight politicians who are shamelessly criticising continuity for selfish political interest to give up and accept the fact that there is no alternative to Governor Idris, before they face painful regret and disgrace.”

He added: “Therefore, patriotic indigenes of Kebbi State who are truly interested in development should support his continuity.”

Gen. Sarkin Yaki urged the people of Kebbi State to reject “selfish, unproductive and desperate politicians” and instead appreciate Governor Idris by giving him another mandate to consolidate his visible achievements.

The Governor’s Media Team is led by the Commissioner for Information, Yakubu Ahmed BK, and is currently on a nationwide advocacy tour to engage stakeholders and major media organisations on the developmental strides of the administration.

Gen. Sarkin Yaki therefore called on all Kebbi citizens, “regardless of party affiliation, to rally behind Comrade Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, to ensure continuity of purposeful, impactful and inclusive governance beyond 2027.”
