Baze University has graduated 928 indigenes of Jigawa state who successfully completed an intensive digital skills training programme under the Federal Government’s World Bank-assisted Innovation Development and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) Project. 

The graduation ceremony, organised by the Jigawa State Government at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Dutse, brought together the state Governor, Malam Umar Namadi; the Minister of Education, Dr Moruf Olatunji Alausa; the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad; representatives of the World Bank-assisted IDEAS Project, Baze University, senior government officials, development partners and other stakeholders. 

Speaking on behalf of Baze University Management, the Director of IT Services, Dr Alhassan Abdulmutallib, described the graduation of the 928 Jigawa indigenes as a significant milestone in the nationwide impact of the IDEAS Programme. 

He said the achievement demonstrated what could be accomplished when the federal government, state governments, universities and development partners collaborate to equip young Nigerians with relevant skills for the digital economy. 

Dr Abdulmutallib commended the Jigawa State Government for hosting the graduation ceremony, providing physical training infrastructure and supporting its indigenes throughout the learning process. He also appreciated the Federal Ministry of Education for spearheading the initiative and engaging Baze University to deploy its academic expertise, technological resources and institutional capacity towards developing a digitally skilled workforce. 

The graduates were trained in high-demand technology areas, including Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics and Software Engineering, equipping them with practical knowledge and competencies relevant to Nigeria’s growing digital economy. 

Under the programme, Baze University was initially awarded a grant to train 900 participants nationwide. During the application process, more than 150,000 applications were received, leading to the screening and selection of 55,500 participants who were accommodated through online and physical learning platforms. Nationwide, more than 4,500 participants earned Professional Diplomas, while over 33,000 received Certificates of Participation. 

Addressing the graduates, Dr Abdulmutallib urged them to see their qualifications as the beginning of a lifelong journey of learning, innovation and economic contribution. 

He encouraged them to apply the practical and project-based knowledge acquired during the programme to solve real-world problems in their communities, while exploring opportunities in employment, entrepreneurship and the global digital economy. 

He further urged the graduates to continually upgrade their skills and embrace innovation, noting that rapid changes in technology require professionals to remain adaptable and committed to lifelong learning. 

Governor Namadi, who described the performance of the graduands as encouraging, announced that 30 outstanding participants would each receive a laptop computer from the Jigawa State Government. He also disclosed that four of the graduates had secured employment with Baze University. 

In his keynote address, the Minister of Education, Dr Moruf Olatunji Alausa, described the graduation as an important milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to equip young people with the digital and technical competencies required for the knowledge economy. 

Also speaking, the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, praised the Jigawa State Government’s sustained investment in human capital development, describing the ICT training programme as a practical demonstration of the administration’s commitment to preparing young people for opportunities in the digital economy. 

Baze University reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national digital literacy, employability and skills development, while expressing appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Education, Jigawa State Government, Jigawa State Youth Empowerment Agency, project facilitators and other stakeholders whose collaboration contributed to the success of the training programme and graduation ceremony. 

The university said the successful graduation of the 928 beneficiaries further demonstrates the value of strategic partnerships between higher education institutions, government and development partners in building Nigeria’s human capital and preparing young people for the opportunities of the digital age.
