The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has reemphasised that the award of contracts for the construction of the Lagos/Calabar Coastal Highway and other legacy projects of the Federal Government went through competitive bidding.

Umahi made this remark at the weekend in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, during an inspection visit to ongoing road construction projects and flyovers in the state.

Apparently referring to insinuations in some quarters alluding that the highway contract did not conform to procurement laws, Umahi emphasised that special procurement was adopted in the process.

The Minister reiterated that the award of the coastal highway and other legacy projects of the federal government conformed to the procurement laws for contract awards.

He stated that the Coastal Highway project was awarded to Hiteck Construction Limited, insisting that President Tinubu has shown commitment to the timely completion of the project.

“This contract went through competitive bidding; it was won by requisite contractors that had the technical know-how to execute the project”

The Minister queried why no criticisms emanated on the Sokoto/ Badagry highway, Akwanga /Jos and Trans-Saharan highways respectively.

Umahi, during the occasion, inspected the ongoing flyover at Onueke in Ezza South Local Government Area, the site for the flyover at Ukwuachi and the Onueke-Ukwuachi-Mbeke-Benue and Owote /Abuja highway.

He emphasised that the massive roads and infrastructural development embarked upon by the federal government will boost the economic and commercial potentials of the country.

Speaking against the backdrop of federal government road interventions in the south-east zone, Umahi disclosed that a section of both the Aba/Ikot Ekpene highway and the Aba/Ph highway has been completed,

He urged the south-east geo-political zone to strive and ensure that they deliver 100 per cent votes to President Bola Tinubu during the 2027 general election.

“The marginalisation of the south-east is now a thing of the past; it’s time for the zone to wake up to the realities of our time”

The Minister was accompanied on the inspection tour by the Federal Controller of Works, Ebonyi State, officials of Infiouest Construction Limited, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-East zone), Barrister Mrs Chioma Nweze, among others.
