The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the uploading of polling unit results from Saturday’s Osun state governorship election to its Result Viewing Portal (IReV), with 402 of the 3,763 expected results uploaded as of 4:03pm.

Uploads begin after voting

The uploading of results followed the conclusion of voting and the commencement of sorting and counting at polling units across Osun.

Checks on the IReV portal showed that the latest result at the time was uploaded at 4:03:10pm from Polling Unit 006, Registration Area 04, Ward 02, with collation continuing at different levels across the state.

The IReV platform allows members of the public, political parties, observers and other stakeholders to view polling unit-level results electronically after they have been uploaded by election officials.

INEC introduced the system as part of efforts to improve transparency in the management and collation of election results. The commission has previously used the platform for several off-cycle elections, including governorship polls.

Attention turns to result transparency

The pace of the uploads has attracted considerable attention as stakeholders await the emergence of a clearer picture of the election.

Earlier in the afternoon, music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, questioned the delay in the uploading of results, urging INEC to provide timely updates and ensure transparency in the process.

The concern came shortly after voting ended at several polling units, with the singer asking why results had not yet appeared on the portal.

However, the initial pace of uploading subsequently increased. By 4:36pm, reports indicated that 753 polling unit results had been uploaded, representing 19.53 per cent of the 3,763 expected results.

This means the 402-result figure represented an early stage of the electronic result-uploading process rather than the final position for the election.

Adeleke, Oyebamiji, Salaam in major contest

The election is a three-way contest involving the incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party; the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji; and the African Democratic Congress candidate, Najeem Salaam, alongside other candidates.

Adeleke is seeking another term in office after winning the 2022 governorship election, while Oyebamiji is the APC challenger.

Salaam is also regarded as one of the prominent contenders in the race, with the ADC seeking to make significant gains in Osun.

The candidates and their supporters are now awaiting the official collation of results from polling units to wards, local government areas and eventually the state collation centre.

Result uploads not same as final declaration

The figures appearing on IReV should not be interpreted as a final tally of the election.

The portal displays results as they are uploaded from individual polling units. The official winner of the governorship election will ultimately be determined through INEC’s established collation process.

INEC is expected to continue receiving and uploading results as election officials complete documentation and transmission from polling units.


The commission’s previous election records show that Osun has 3,763 polling units, underscoring the scale of the exercise and why the electronic upload is expected to continue for some time.

With voting concluded and counting underway, attention is now shifting from the conduct of the poll to the transparency, speed and accuracy of the result collation process.

The outcome will determine whether Adeleke retains the Osun governorship or whether the APC, ADC or another participating party succeeds in taking control of the state.
