Ten-man Lens defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 on Sunday to lift the French Champions’ Trophy, denying the French champions a second trophy in five days.

Florian Thauvin scored the decisive goal in the 32nd minute as Lens secured victory in their first match under new coach Dino Toppmoeller.

PSG dominated possession early on but struggled to create clear-cut chances, with Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser making a comfortable save from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Lens took the lead when PSG failed to clear Matthieu Udol’s cross-shot, allowing Thauvin to finish at the back post.

However, Lens were reduced to 10 men six minutes before half-time after Kyllian Antonio was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Maghnes Akliouche.

PSG came close to equalising before the break when Desire Doue’s effort from a tight angle struck the crossbar.

Despite their numerical advantage, PSG struggled to break down a disciplined Lens defence after the restart. Substitute Nuno Mendes also went close with a long-range effort before Ousmane Dembele was introduced alongside Fabian Ruiz.

PSG’s night ended on a sour note when Mendes was sent off three minutes from full-time for elbowing Lens wing-back Michal Skoras.

The result gave Lens their second major trophy of the year after they won their first French Cup in May.

PSG coach Luis Enrique admitted his side had fallen short despite their dominance.

“I think we deserved more,” Enrique said. “But I have to congratulate Lens — they won, and they played very well, with their usual intensity.”

PSG will now turn their attention to the defence of their Ligue 1 title, which begins at home against Rennes next week.
