THE International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) has alleged that no fewer than 92 mostly Igbo Christian travellers were abducted in two days.
Intersociety made the allegation in a statement signed by its Lead Researcher, Mr Emeka Umeagbalasi, and other officials, and made available to newsmen on Sunday in Enugu.
The organisation said the incidents occurred on Aug. 9 and Aug. 13 along major highways linking the South-East with the South-West and North-Central regions.
It alleged that the attacks occurred in at least seven separate incidents in Kogi, Benue and Ondo states.
According to the group, the incidents involved travellers heading mainly to Lagos and Abuja from various parts of the South-East and South-South.
It attributed the attacks to what it described as “Jihadist Fulani Herdsmen and allied Jihadist Fulani bandits.”
Intersociety said about 60 travellers were abducted on Aug. 9, while another 32 were allegedly abducted on Aug. 13.
It said about 20 passengers were abducted along the Auchi-Okene Federal Expressway in Kogi on Aug. 9.
The organisation said the victims included passengers travelling in a Sharon 14-seater bus from Delta to Abuja and a Toyota Sienna car travelling from Abuja to Delta.
It said seven of 11 passengers in the Sharon bus were abducted, while four escaped.
Similarly, it said six passengers were abducted from the Sienna vehicle, although its account contained discrepancies in the number of passengers and those who escaped.
Intersociety further alleged that about 40 travellers were abducted along the Itobe-Achigili-Anyigba Highway in Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi.
It said the victims were travelling in three vehicles, including an 18-seater bus reportedly belonging to Peace Mass Transit.
The group said the other vehicles were a 14-seater Toyota Hiace bus and a Toyota Sienna car originating from the South-East.
According to Intersociety, the attacks occurred within about two hours on Aug. 9, with the first reported incident occurring at about 4 p.m.
It said another attack occurred at about 6 p.m., with the incidents reportedly taking place at locations believed to be close to one another.
The organisation also alleged that 14 passengers were abducted along the Otukpo-Adoka Road in Benue while travelling towards Abuja.
It said five of the passengers escaped or were rescued, while nine remained unaccounted for.
On Aug. 13, Intersociety said another 32 Eastern travellers were abducted around Ore in Ondo State.
It said the incident involved an 18-seater bus travelling to Lagos and another 18-seater bus reportedly operated by Sunny Bright Mass Transit.
The group said the latter vehicle was carrying 14 passengers travelling from Enugu to Abuja.
According to the organisation, five passengers were rescued while nine others remained unaccounted for.
It further cited media reports that 16 Eastern-origin commuters abducted in Kogi on Aug. 9 were rescued on Aug. 10.
It identified two of the rescued passengers as Ngozi Stephen and Joshua Daniel.
Intersociety said photographs and videos circulating on social media showed abandoned buses allegedly used to convey some of the victims.
It said one of the buses recovered in the Ore incident had broken windows, damaged parts and passengers’ luggage.
The organisation also referred to footage purportedly showing a girl calling for help after her father was allegedly abducted along the route.
It said that, based on its compilation, about 30 of the 92 abducted travellers had either escaped or been rescued.
The organisation consequently estimated that 62 remained in captivity or were feared dead.
Intersociety said the alleged incidents demonstrated growing insecurity along major routes connecting the South-East with other parts of the country.
It identified forest and bush areas around major highways as among locations where travellers were allegedly vulnerable to abduction.
The group also listed communal forests, farmlands, boundary areas and forest settlements as areas requiring increased security attention.
It expressed particular concern about routes linking the South-East with Edo, Ondo, Ogun, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Taraba, Kaduna and Abuja.
Intersociety urged political leaders and prominent socio-cultural organisations from the South-East to take steps toward addressing the security challenges confronting travellers.
It called for stronger security measures along major highways and improved intelligence gathering to prevent further abductions.
The organisation also urged relevant authorities to intensify efforts to locate and rescue travellers still unaccounted for.
Intersociety said the reported incidents should serve as a warning to governments and security agencies to strengthen protection for motorists and passengers on inter-state highways.
It urged authorities to investigate the reported abductions, establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents and ensure that perpetrators were brought to justice.
The statement was also signed by Mrs Chidinma Evangeline Udegbunam, Head of Campaign and Publicity, and Mrs Obianuju Joy Igboeli, Head of Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, Intersociety.

Seven Most Dangerous Jihadist Abduction Locations Within And Outside Igbo Land: 1. “Fulani Invaded and Occupied or Ceded or Procured Igbo Communal Forests, 2. Fulani Invaded and Occupied or Ceded or Procured Igbo Land Communal Bushes, 3. Fulani Invaded and Occupied or Ceded or Procured Igbo Land Communal Farmland Settlements, 4. Fulani Invaded and Occupied or Ceded or Procured Igbo Land Forests belonging to Ancient Igbo Deities or Oracles, 5. Fulani Invaded and Occupied Non-Igbo Forests, Bushes and Farm Settlements located at Igbo Boundary Areas with Others, 6. Vicinities and areas or communities close to major Military and Police Formations located in the Region-including the Army/Navy/Air Force formations in places like in Owerri, Owerre-Nta, Ogbaru, Oguta, Ohafia, Asaba, Amansea, Abakiliki, Enugu, Awkunanaw and their neighboring Elele, Asaba, Agbor, Ogoja, among others; 7. Jihadist Fulani Herdsmen Occupied Forests and Bushes located within the South-East neighbors and outside others including in Edo, Ondo, Ogun, Kaduna, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue-Taraba routes, Kaduna-Abuja routes and Lagos-Abuja routes, etc., where traveler-South-Easterners are waylaid, abducted and ransomed, or abducted and killed or disappeared untraced.
The jihadist abduction of estimated 92 mostly Igbo Land dominated Judeo-Christian travellers in just two days is also a clear confirmation that Igbo Land Gateway into South-West and North-Central Nigeria has been taken over by Roadway and Forest-way Terror Fulani Jihadists and this must be checkmated by Igbo Land political leaders and reputable associations in Diaspora.
