On the occasion of his 85th birthday, I join millions of Nigerians in celebrating General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, GCFR, an elder statesman, a remarkable Nigerian and one of the most influential figures in the political history of our country.

For me, however, today’s celebration is much more personal.

General Babangida is not only a former Head of State and an important figure in Nigeria’s history. He is also a father, mentor and teacher whose influence has been an important part of my own journey. For many years, he has been one of the people I have looked up to. Every opportunity to sit with him is an opportunity to learn something new. His experience, wisdom, encouragement and understanding of Nigeria have formed the way I think about leadership, politics, public policy and the future of our country.

His encouragement has also played an important role in the journey that brought me to where I am today. There are moments when a few words from a respected elder can give a young person the confidence to keep going. General Babangida has been that kind of person to me.

His place in Nigeria’s history goes beyond the years he spent in government. His military career, his years as Nigeria’s Head of State and his continued contribution to national conversations have made him an important part of our country’s story.

His administration introduced several major reforms and initiatives that influenced Nigeria’s political and economic development. From infrastructure and economic reforms to institution-building and greater opportunities for the private sector, many of the decisions taken during his time in office continue to form part of conversations about Nigeria’s development.

But his influence did not end when he left office.

For more than three decades, General Babangida has continued to share his views, experience and counsel on issues concerning Nigeria. At 85, he represents a living link between important periods in our national history and the present generation.

That longevity of influence is not something that happens by chance.

I have also followed with interest his recent reflections on some of the most difficult chapters in Nigeria’s political history, including his acknowledgment of the outcome of the June 12, 1993 presidential election and his acceptance of responsibility for decisions taken under his leadership. These reflections are important parts of our national historical record.

As a student of leadership and political economy, I believe Nigeria must continue to study the experiences of its leaders. We must learn from their successes, understand the difficult decisions they made and examine their mistakes. That is how nations learn from their past and build a better future.

Beyond all of this, I am grateful for the personal relationship I have with General Babangida. It is a father-and-son relationship built on respect, learning and genuine affection. Every time I sit with him, I leave with something new to think about.

Sir, thank you for your guidance. Thank you for your encouragement. Thank you for believing in young Nigerians and for giving people like me the confidence to dream bigger and contribute to our country.

On your 85th birthday, I pray that Almighty Allah grants you good health, peace and many more years.

May the wisdom that has come with your long journey continue to serve our country, and may your remaining years be filled with the joy of seeing a stronger, more prosperous and united Nigeria.

Happy 85th birthday, my father, mentor and teacher, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, GCFR.
