The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Jacob Irewa, over an alleged attempt to kill his wife, Berida Irawo, in Felele area of Lokoja, the Kogi state capital.
The incident, which occurred on Friday at about 8:30 p.m., was reported to the B Division Surveillance Team in Felele, prompting an immediate response from operatives who swiftly moved to the scene and apprehended the suspect.
According to preliminary investigations by the police, the violent attack stemmed from a domestic disagreement between the couple.
The victim was said to have burnt some of the suspect’s clothes; thinking they were worn out, an action that reportedly provoked the suspect.
Angered by the development, the suspect allegedly threatened his wife before fetching petrol from his motorcycle and setting her ablaze in a shocking act of violence.
The victim, however, survived the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at Honey Gold Hospital in Felele.
Police authorities disclosed that the suspect has confessed to committing the act during interrogation, while a comprehensive investigation has commenced to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and gather additional evidence.
The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi while speaking on the incident condemned the act and reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for all forms of violence, particularly domestic abuse.
He urged residents to adopt lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes, especially within the family, warning that acts capable of endangering lives would not be tolerated under any guise.
The police further assured that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
