Re-elected Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed the state Attorney-General to withdraw the lawsuit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over the freezing of a government bank account.

Adeleke said the decision followed the personal intervention of President Bola Tinubu, who directed the anti-graft agency to lift the restriction.

The governor disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, hours after he was declared winner of the August 15 governorship election.

“I have instructed my Attorney General to drop it. Mr President has done well. He called me. What more do I want?” Adeleke said.

The governor said he was prepared to put the political disagreements and legal battle behind him following Tinubu’s intervention.

Adeleke had challenged the EFCC’s action in court, describing the freezing of the account shortly before the election as politically motivated and disruptive to his administration.

The suit reportedly demanded ₦2 billion in aggravated and exemplary damages for what the state government described as unlawful interference with public funds.

The EFCC maintained that its action was connected to an investigation into the alleged fraudulent handling of about ₦11 billion in Ecology Funds, intervention funds and Federation Account allocations.

The commission also said it detected suspicious transfers from the state government’s accounts into several corporate entities.

Tinubu subsequently directed the EFCC to approach the court and vacate the order freezing the account.

The President said he was embarrassed by the timing of the action, warning that no federal institution should create the impression that it was interfering in the Osun governorship election.

Addressing the invitation and interrogation of some of his officials by the EFCC, Adeleke said he had instructed his lawyers to provide them with the necessary legal assistance.

He also alleged that some APC members in Osun had boasted about using federal influence against his administration.
