Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate removal of houses and other structures found to be obstructing waterways in Maitama and other flood-prone parts of Abuja.
Wike gave the directive on Tuesday after inspecting areas affected by flooding in Maitama, where he expressed concern over developments that have blocked natural drainage channels and worsened flooding.
The minister said enforcement would commence immediately and continue until Saturday, stressing that no property owner would be spared, regardless of political affiliation, social status or position.
He maintained that the government would not allow individual interests to endanger lives and property in the nation’s capital, particularly in areas identified as vulnerable to flooding.
Wike directed relevant FCT authorities to identify structures built on waterways and take immediate action to clear the affected areas.
The move comes as the FCT intensifies efforts to address recurring flooding and prevent further damage in vulnerable communities across Abuja.
