The European Union has allocated €1.5 million in emergency humanitarian funding to Nigeria to help contain ongoing cholera outbreaks, expand treatment access, and prevent further deaths.

The support forms part of a broader €2.3 million package announced by the European Commission for Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Chad, amid a rising cholera burden across Africa.

According to the World Health Organization, 61,888 cholera cases and 1,230 deaths were recorded across 16 African countries between January 1 and May 31, 2026.

Nigeria reported 6,860 cases and 80 deaths in the same period, including 5,798 new cases and 54 deaths in May alone, placing it among the countries with the highest burdens on the continent.

Nigeria’s allocation will fund additional intervention teams, essential cholera kits, and expanded water, sanitation, and hygiene measures in affected communities.

It will also strengthen epidemiological surveillance in hard-to-reach areas, improve case management, and boost risk communication and community awareness campaigns on cholera transmission, prevention, and the need for timely treatment.

Public water points and household water supplies will be treated under the intervention, while surveillance in inaccessible areas will be enhanced for earlier detection and response.
