Pledges Justice, Enhanced Security

The Sokoto State Government has received with deep shock and sadness reports of a fresh attack that claimed the lives of 32 innocent residents and four gallant soldiers of the Nigerian Army.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Office of the Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Sokoto State Government on Tuesday.

The statement also acknowledged the bravery and courage of local community members who confronted the attackers and successfully neutralised 13 Lakurawa fighters during the incident.

“On behalf of His Excellency, the Governor of Sokoto State, Ahmed Aliyu, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the affected communities across the state,” the statement said.

“We pray to Almighty Allah to forgive the shortcomings of the deceased and grant them Aljannah Firdaus. We also pray for the speedy recovery of all those injured.”

In response to the incident, the Sokoto State Government has taken the following measures and directed security agencies to intensify operations and pursue the perpetrators to ensure those responsible are apprehended and brought to justice.

“Activated emergency medical and relief support for victims, injured persons, and displaced residents in the affected communities.

“Constituted a high-level delegation, led by the Deputy Governor, to visit the affected communities, commiserate with the people, assess the extent of the damage, and identify additional areas requiring government intervention.

“Strengthened coordination among security agencies, community vigilantes, and local government councils to improve intelligence gathering, early warning mechanisms, and rapid response to emerging threats.

“Directed relevant government agencies to continue monitoring the situation and provide necessary support to affected communities to prevent further displacement and restore normalcy.”

The Government reassures the people of Sokoto State that the protection of lives and property remains its highest priority.

“We urge residents, particularly those in affected and neighbouring communities, to remain calm and vigilant, and to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies,” the statement added.

The Government further appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders, religious leaders, and other stakeholders to support ongoing security efforts by encouraging residents to cooperate with security personnel and promptly report suspicious movements and activities.

The Sokoto State Government said it is engaging with the Federal Government and relevant security authorities to scale up security presence and strengthen coordinated operations aimed at decisively addressing the Lakurawa threat.

The Government commended the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security personnel for their sacrifices in protecting communities across the state and assured them of its continued support.

“Sokoto State remains united against terrorism and other forms of criminality.

“The Government will continue to take all necessary measures, within its constitutional powers and in collaboration with the Federal Government, to safeguard the lives, property, and livelihoods of its citizens.”
