…calls for police investigation
The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised the alarm over alleged post-election attacks on its members and supporters across the state, warning that the development could threaten peace and security if not urgently addressed.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s Director of Media and Information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, the APC alleged that some of its members had been attacked by individuals it described as political hoodlums linked to the Accord Party since the declaration of Governor Ademola Adeleke as winner of the August 15 governorship election.
The party claimed that the alleged attacks had occurred in different parts of the state, including Oke-Fia in Osogbo, Amudaoba in Modakeke, Iba in Ifelodun Local Government Area and Ilie, where it alleged that the property of an APC member was destroyed.
The APC further alleged that some local government council chairmen and executive members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) had attempted to regain access to council premises and motor parks with the assistance of individuals allegedly armed with weapons.
According to the party, four motorcycles belonging to its members were allegedly burnt in Modakeke shortly after the election result was announced, while the shop of a female APC member was also reportedly destroyed. The party also referenced a video purportedly showing the assault of an APC female supporter.
The APC listed several individuals as alleged victims of the attacks and also named persons it claimed were involved in the incidents, urging security agencies to independently investigate the allegations and establish the facts surrounding them.
The party condemned the alleged violence, stressing that political differences or the outcome of an election should not be used as justification for intimidation, assault or destruction of property.
It warned that continued attacks could trigger reprisals and escalate into a broader breakdown of law and order, urging its members and supporters to remain calm and resist any temptation to take the law into their own hands.
The APC called on the Osun State Police Command and other relevant security agencies to urgently investigate the reported incidents, identify those responsible and prosecute anyone found culpable, regardless of political affiliation.
The party also appealed to Governor Adeleke to intervene and ensure that his supporters respect the rights and safety of political opponents, urging him to manage his electoral victory in a manner that promotes peace, reconciliation and stability across Osun State.
