Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his re-election while calling for remembrance and support for those who lost their lives during the electoral process.
Obi, in a statement following the Osun governorship election, commended the people of the state for participating in the democratic process and described the outcome as a reaffirmation of the principle that political power belongs to the people.
“Once again, I congratulate Governor Ademola Adeleke and the good people of Osun State on the outcome of the election and, more importantly, on safeguarding the democratic process,” Obi said.

He, however, urged Nigerians not to celebrate the electoral victory without remembering those who allegedly paid the ultimate price during the election period.
“As we celebrate this success, let’s not forget those who made the supreme sacrifice for our democracy during the Osun election,” he said.
Obi expressed sympathy with the families of people who lost their lives during the electoral period, calling for compassion, solidarity and support for the affected families.
He also urged relevant authorities to identify and reach out to the families of those who died, irrespective of their political affiliations.
“I therefore hope that the families of those who lost their loved ones will be identified and reached through visits, condolences, and appropriate compensation, irrespective of the political side to which they belonged,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor stressed that elections should be centred on the choices and aspirations of citizens rather than the loss of lives.
“Elections should be about the people, their choices, and their aspirations — not about the loss of precious lives. No political victory is worth the blood of a Nigerian,” he added.
Obi also called for the continued strengthening of Nigeria’s democratic institutions, saying elections should no longer result in the loss of human lives.
He advocated issue-based political campaigns and adherence to the rule of law as ways of reducing violence and ensuring peaceful electoral contests.
“My prayer is that our democracy will continue to mature to a point where elections no longer come at the cost of human lives, and where political differences can always be settled through issue-based campaigns and the rule of law,” he said.
Obi prayed for the families who lost loved ones during the election and asked God to grant the deceased eternal rest.
He expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, saying, “With the right conduct of elections, a New Nigeria is POssible.”
Adeleke emerged victorious in the Osun governorship election, defeating his major challenger, All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Oyebamiji, to secure another term as governor.
