More than 20 people have reportedly been killed and several others injured after gunmen attacked Binper community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The fresh attack reportedly occurred between midnight on Monday and the early hours of Tuesday, August 18, 2026, throwing the community into panic and leaving residents struggling to account for their loved ones. Blueprint reports
The attackers, said to be heavily armed, reportedly moved through the community from one house to another, forcing their way into homes where residents were asleep before attacking them.
Attackers moved from house to house
An eyewitness, Daniel Musa, who spoke with journalists, said the attackers operated for hours and targeted residents inside their homes.
He said more than 20 people had been confirmed dead as of Tuesday morning, while several others sustained serious injuries.
“Our village came under attack last night and in the early hours of today, Tuesday, by heavily armed persons,” Musa said.
“They were moving from house to house, opening the doors of people who were sleeping and slaughtering them.
“As of this morning, we have confirmed over 20 deaths, while several others sustained serious injuries and some people are still missing.”
The reported attack has heightened concerns over the security situation in Mangu and other communities considered vulnerable to attacks in Plateau State.
Residents demand urgent action
Another resident, John Dalyop, who confirmed the attack, described the incident as terrible and called for an immediate response from security agencies.
Dalyop appealed to the newly appointed Commissioner of Police in the state to take decisive action against those responsible for the killings.
“We expected the new Commissioner of Police in the state to act quickly and go after those responsible,” he said.
He condemned the attack as barbaric and urged both the Plateau State and Federal Governments to strengthen security around vulnerable communities in Mangu and other parts of the state.
According to him, residents could no longer afford to live under constant fear of attacks, particularly in communities where security presence remains a major concern.
Victims receiving treatment
Dalyop said residents who sustained injuries during the attack had been taken to nearby hospitals for medical attention.
He added that community leaders and residents were also working to establish the whereabouts of people who were still missing following the attack.
The number of casualties could not be independently verified as of the time of filing the report.
Security operatives were, however, reportedly deployed to the community on Tuesday morning in an effort to restore calm and prevent further attacks.
The deployment followed the reported invasion, as residents remained apprehensive over the possibility of further attacks.
Security agencies yet to confirm casualty figure
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from security authorities before filing the report were unsuccessful.
As a result, the casualty figures remain based on accounts from residents and eyewitnesses in the affected community.
The fresh incident adds to the security concerns confronting several communities in Plateau State, where attacks have repeatedly resulted in deaths, injuries and displacement.
Residents are now calling for stronger security measures, faster intervention when attacks occur and the prosecution of those responsible for violence against civilians.
For the people of Binper, attention is now focused on the recovery of victims, identification of those killed, locating missing residents and restoring security to the community following the deadly overnight attack.
