Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has reaffirmed his administration’s support for the 2026 Ikogosi Marathon, as organisers announced that the 17.5-kilometre road race will hold on October 31 with an expected 8,000 participants.
The race, organised by the Ikogosi Marathon Initiative in collaboration with the Ekiti State Government, is expected to attract runners from across Nigeria and other countries.
In a statement on Tuesday, Oyebanji said the government’s backing reflects its commitment to youth development, grassroots sports, sports tourism and initiatives that stimulate economic activity across the state.
Organisers said this year’s edition is expected to build on the 2025 race, which drew about 5,000 participants, as the event continues to grow as a road-running and sports tourism fixture.
A total prize purse of ₦30 million will be shared among elite athletes and eligible Ekiti indigenous runners.
The organisers said preparations are focused on meeting international standards, with emphasis on athlete welfare, safety, organisation and the overall race experience.
The marathon will begin in Ilawe-Ekiti and finish at the Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort, with the route designed to showcase the state’s tourism assets, culture and infrastructure.
Organisers also said the event is expected to boost the local economy by attracting visitors who will patronise hotels, restaurants, transport operators, traders, artisans and other businesses.
They added that the marathon will create opportunities for young people in event management, hospitality, logistics, media, security and other services connected to the race.
The event is also expected to provide a platform for grassroots sports development and talent discovery, particularly for athletes from Ekiti State.
