Patrick Vieira has been appointed head coach of the Senegal national team, with the former France and Arsenal midfielder taking charge of the Lions of Teranga in a new era for Senegalese football.
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) confirmed Vieira’s appointment on Tuesday through its official X account, following the departure of Pape Thiaw and his technical staff.
“Patrick Vieira has become the new coach of the Senegal senior national team. The date of his official presentation and the next steps in his appointment process will be announced later. Welcome to Senegal,” the FSF said.

Vieira replaces Thiaw
Vieira takes over from Thiaw, who was relieved of his duties following Senegal’s disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Thiaw led Senegal to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, but his tenure was later overshadowed by controversy after the team walked off during the final following a disputed refereeing decision. Senegal were subsequently stripped of the title, which was awarded to Morocco.
At the 2026 World Cup, Senegal reached the round of 16 before suffering a defeat to Belgium, a result that drew heavy criticism from the country’s media and raised questions over the team’s direction.
Vieira begins new chapter
Vieira brings considerable playing and coaching experience to the Senegal job.
The former midfielder enjoyed a distinguished playing career with AC Milan, Arsenal, Juventus, Inter Milan and Manchester City. He is best remembered for his nine-year spell at Arsenal, where he made 406 appearances and scored 34 goals.
He also won the 1998 FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championship and FIFA Confederations Cup with France.
Since moving into management, Vieira has coached Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa, following an earlier spell working with Manchester City’s youth teams.
His appointment now presents a new challenge as he attempts to translate his experience at club and international levels into success with Senegal.
Major challenge ahead
Vieira’s immediate task will be to rebuild confidence around the national team and prepare Senegal for the upcoming AFCON qualifying campaign.
